Zynthian Kit V5.1 released!

Good news! After successfully sold-out the V5 kit, that was released by August 2023, we are proud of announcing the release of the new Zynthain Kit V5.1.

The new Zynthian Kit V5.1 doubles the processing power from the original V5 kit. It’s designed to work with the amazing Raspberry Pi 5 computer board, that has increased its capacity in many aspects.

More than twice the processing power from previous version, much faster access to the SD-card, shorter startup time and support for NVMe disks are some of the improvements that the new flagship board from the Raspberry Pi Foundation brings to zynthian.

These are the RPi5 specifications:

  • Broadcom BCM2712 2.4GHz quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A76 CPU, with cryptography extensions, 512KB per-core L2 caches and a 2MB shared L3 cache
  • VideoCore VII GPU, supporting OpenGL ES 3.1, Vulkan 1.2
  • Dual 4Kp60 HDMI® display output with HDR support
  • 4Kp60 HEVC decoderLPDDR4X-4267 SDRAM (2GB, 4GB, and 8GB)
  • Dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi®Bluetooth 5.0 / Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)
  • microSD card slot, with support for high-speed SDR104 mode
  • 2 × USB 3.0 ports, supporting simultaneous 5Gbps operation
  • 2 × USB 2.0 portsGigabit Ethernet, with PoE+ support (requires separate PoE+ HAT)
  • 2 × 4-lane MIPI camera/display transceivers
  • PCIe 2.0 x1 interface for fast peripherals (requires separate M.2 HAT or other adapter)
  • 5V/5A DC power via USB-C, with Power Delivery support
  • Raspberry Pi standard 40-pin header
  • Real-time clock (RTC), powered from external battery

You can read more about the Raspberry Pi 5 in the next links:

The long awaited upgrade has taken more than expected, mainly due to software-related challenges. The Raspberry Pi 5 is a new beast and the number of changes in hardware interfaces from previous versions is really huge. We have had to work more than we thought, but it’s been worth the effort.

Regarding the hardware itself, the kit V5.1 has been redesigned to work with the RPi5. The aluminum case has been adapted to fit the new position of RBPi5 connectors, the main board outline has been changed accordingly and the thermal block has been totally re-engineered to fit the new RPi5 chip layout. For the rest, it keeps being the same than previous kit V5.

Is the new V5.1 kit ready to mount the raspberry pi 5? or it’s needed to mod the main board ( cut it with a dremel ) ?
